John Minichillo
One of the things that attracted us to this house in East Nashville, was the stone façade and the way it was tucked away in trees and greenery, despite being in the city. My writing room was beyond this window, in what was supposed to be the master bedroom. I didn’t notice until after we moved in, but there’s a cross above the window, so the room has a holiness about it, the outer look of a chapel. I’ve always imagined if there was a ghost in our house, this is where she would reside, and that she would approve of my writing there. While working on The Snow Whale, my young son was often in a playpen next to my desk. Now the room is his, with his toys everywhere, and my office has been moved to a room in the back that I haven’t used, not yet. I’m in transition and intend to use part of a Tennessee Artists Fellowship to get an iPad, and to use it for writing, anywhere and everywhere in this house.

The Snow Whale, a contemporary retelling of Moby-Dick, is John Minichillo’s first novel. He lives in Nashville with the writer, Katrina Gray, and their son.
